Introduction
Thiruppurambiyam Pallippadai Temple (Bhagavathy Ayyanar Temple) is located in the Thiruppurambiyam, Kumbakonam taluk, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu.Thiruppurambiyam is a prosperous town situated between Maniyar and Kollidam, a tributary of Cauvery. In the history of Tamil Nadu, especially in the history of Chola, a word that cannot be avoided is Thiruppurambiyam. The Pallipapadai temple was built for Vijayalayar who was badly injured in the war and later the two kings who died in the war.
Puranic Significance
Later, historians speculated that the Bhagwati Ayyanar temple here was the school. Ayyan means king and Prithvipati may mean Bhagvati. This temple is presently known as Ayyanar Temple, is in the centre of the great mound. The shrine of Bhagvati Ayyanar named after King Prithivi and the big Ayyanar shrine named after King Vijayalaya chola were erected facing east. The temple is said to be more than 1500 years old.
Outside the temple, there were several stone blocks made of bricks. On the wall of that Ayyanar temple was written about Pallippadai temple. A big vel is also standing in front of the temple. Nearby are two centre stones with incomprehensible symbols. Under a tall banyan tree directly opposite the temple is a slightly defaced Korravai idol. There is no vimana above, no carvings or domes. There are no proper roads to reach the temple. There is no information board to know the location. Even today, people celebrate them as guardian deities because the souls of the kings enshrined in the temple are still guarding this land.
