Address

Thiruppirudhi Sri Paramapurusha Perumal Temple – Joshimutt, Chamoli District, Uttarakhand.

Deity

Paramapurusha Perumal, Amman: Parmila Thayar

Introduction

    • Thiruppirudhi, also known as Joshimutt, signifies the close relationship between Emperumaan (Lord Vishnu) and his bhaktas (devotees). Devotees show their affection (Pireethi) towards the Lord, who reciprocates with the same affection, leading to the name “Thiruppirudhi” (the place of affection).
    • The temple is located around 154 miles from Haridwar, along the route from Devaprayag to Badrinath.
    • Devotees traveling to Badrikashramam, especially in snow, feel relieved and happy upon reaching this place as it is close to their destination.
    • The Salagrama Narasimhar idol at Sankara Mutt is worshipped by devotees as Lord Vishnu.
    • Theerthams: Govardhana Theertham and Indira Theertham.
  • Puranic Significance:
    • The temple is also known as Nandaprayag, named after King Nandar, who performed Yagams here for the well-being of humanity.
    • Kanva Maharishi is believed to have lived in this area.
    • In winter, when Badrikashramam is closed, the Badrinath utsavar is taken to Thiruppirudhi, where Lord Vishnu serves as Badri Narayanan for six months.
    • Among the 108 Divya Desams, this temple is one of two where devotees can reach only with their Aathma (soul), not with their body. The Lord is worshipped in the form of Kidantha Kolam, similar to his form in Thirupparkadal.
    • Thirumangai Alwar is the only Alwar who has composed Mangalasasanam for the deity here in 10 Paasurams. In three of them, he compares the Lord to Rama, Krishna, and Narasimha avatars.
    • Sri Aadhi Sankarar constructed a temple where Sri Narasimhar and Nindra Kola Vasudevar are enshrined. A temple is accessible by steps about 3/4 miles away.
    • Sri Aadhi Sankarar also performed Tapas here and composed the Sankara Bhashyam.
  • Special Features:
    • The Moolavar (main deity) at this temple is Paramapurushan, in the form of Kidantha Kolam (reclining posture) facing east.
    • The temple is especially significant as Sri Aadhi Sankaracharyar, in the 8th century, performed Tapas here under a tree and established the Jyothirmutt, later known as Joshimutt.
    • Thaayar (consort) of the temple is Parimalavalli Naachiyaar.
    • The Pushkarani is known as Maanasaras, as devotees worship the Lord in their minds (Maanaseegam).
    • The Vimaanam of the temple is Govardhana Vimaanam, symbolizing Lord Krishna’s protection of the Yadhavas and cows during the heavy rain in his Govardhana avatar.
  • Festivals:
    • Ramanavami
    • Krishna Jayanthi
