Puranic Significance
- Legend of Arjuna and Krishna:
- According to the Padmapurana, Arjuna visited the temple during a pilgrimage. Thirsty, he sought water from sage Agastya, but there was no water available.
- Realizing it was the trick of Lord Krishna, Arjuna prayed, and Krishna appeared, offering Arjuna a sword.
- When Arjuna dug the land with the sword, water gushed out, forming the Katka Pushkarani (temple tank).
- Krishna also appeared as Parthasarathy (charioteer) to instruct Arjuna on his true divine nature.
- The place became known as Parthanpalli (meaning “school,” where Krishna taught Arjuna).
- Shiva’s Dance Legend:
- The legend links this temple to Shiva’s fury after the death of his consort, Uma.
- As Shiva danced, eleven forms of Shiva appeared, and Vishnu intervened to calm him, appearing in eleven forms across the region.
- These eleven places are believed to correspond to the eleven temples of Thirunangur.
- It is also believed that sages like Agastya, Bharathwaj, Gautama, and Varuna performed penance here.
