Yeri Katha Rama
Introduction
- Location: The Eri Katha Ramar Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is located in Thiruninravur, near Chennai in the Thiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu.
- Significance: The temple is situated on the banks of the Thirunindravur Lake, also known as Varuna Pushkarani. It is in close proximity to the Bhaktavatsala Perumal Temple and the Hridayaleeswarar Temple, both of which are popular among devotees, though Eri Katha Ramar Temple remains lesser-known.
Puranic Significance
- Age: The temple is believed to be 1500 years old, making it older than the Bhaktavatsala Perumal Temple.
- Eri Katha Ramar: The name “Eri Katha Ramar” translates to Lord Rama, the Savior of the Lake. According to legend, when the Thiruninravur Lake was about to breach due to heavy rain, the villagers prayed to Lord Rama. In response, Lord Rama is said to have created a barrier of arrows around the lake, preventing it from flooding and saving the villagers. In gratitude, the locals built the temple on the lake’s banks and named Lord Rama as Eri Katha Ramar.
- Birth of Mudaliyandan: The 11th-century Vaishnava saint Swami Mudaliyandan, a disciple of Sri Ramanuja, is associated with this temple. It is said that during a pilgrimage, his parents stayed at this temple where Lord Rama appeared in their dreams, blessing them with the promise of a child who would be an incarnation of Lord Rama. The child, named Dasarathi in honor of Lord Rama, later became Mudaliyandan and was closely associated with Sri Ramanuja.
Special Features
- Temple Structure: The temple faces east and has a simple structure with a single prakaram. It does not have a Rajagopuram (main tower), and the palipeedam (platform for worship) is absent.
- Anjaneya Shrine: There is a shrine dedicated to Lord Hanuman at the entrance. Just outside the shrine, there is a stone pillar with an image of Sankhu Chakra (conch and discus) and Hanuman carved on it.
- Sanctum and Mandapams:
- The temple has a Mukha Mandapam, Maha Mandapam, and Artha Mandapam.
- Lord Hanuman is depicted in the Artha Mandapa, carrying Lord Rama and Lakshmana on his shoulders while stepping on the Rakshasi Lankini. Hanuman holds a mace and shield in his hands.
- The main deity, Lord Kothanda Rama, is about 8 feet tall and is flanked by Lakshmana and Sita. All three deities are made of stucco.
- Utsava Murtis: The processional idols of Lord Rama, Lakshmana, Sita, and Hanuman are kept in a separate shrine near the main sanctum inside the Bhaktavatsala Perumal Temple.
- Architecture: The temple includes a mandapam with wooden beams and Madras roofing, though it is in a dilapidated condition.

- Annual Brahmotsavam and Rama Navami are the major festivals celebrated at this temple.
- Theerthavari (ritual of taking a sacred dip) is conducted on Panguni Shravanam.
