Introduction
Thirumalayanpoigai Kalakandeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Thirumalayanpoigai village, Kilvelur circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. Thirumalayanpoigai is three km north of Sholanganallur on Tiruvarur – Kangalanjerinagur road. Here the Presiding deity is called as Kalakandeswarar and Mother is called as Varandharanayaki.
Puranic Significance
A place of great importance has fallen into disrepair without worship for many years and a huge tree has closed the temple. They were doing pujas as much as possible by consecrating only the idols in a small brick building. When Kanji Priya conquered the area, he found the idols in the small building and called Narayanaswami Iyer, who belonged to the hereditary trustee family of the temple, and told him that somehow the temple should be renovated, and the work slowly gained momentum and reached its peak today.
The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old. It can be seen that there was a large moat-like structure around the temple premises, which has become encroached upon over time. Lord is in the sanctum towards the west and Mother is towards the south. Vinayagar and Murugan are present at the gate of Lord’s palace. In the north of Prakaram, Sundesar, Bhairav and Sani, some metal idols were found when the forest department dug saplings in the forest in front of this temple.
Lord and Goddess sit down to play. The game is heating up. Devi wins the game. But the verdict is that Lord Thirumal is victorious. Brahman does not want to lie and is calm. So she curses Tirumala to turn into a snake with a smile. Brahma also becomes angry. Having given a wrong judgment, he accepted the curse of Ambikai and prayed to God to get rid of the curse. Both of them appeared in person and blessed Thirumal with darshan and salvation. This is the place where Thirumal Brahman made a bed in this temple and bathed in it. Hence it is called Thirumal-Ayan-Poikai. The Lord, who has blessed them with darshan and curses, has a temple here and blesses the devotees with the blessings they ask for.
