Introduction

    • Naimisaranyam (also known as Neemsar, Nimsar, or Nimkhar) is a significant Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, located in Uttar Pradesh, India.
    • It is one of the 108 Divya Desams, temples revered in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham by the 12 poet-saints (Alwars).
    • The temple is considered of ancient origin with contributions from various ruling kings.
    • It is classified as a Swayamvyaktha Kshetra (self-manifested temple) and is one of the eight Vishnu temples that self-manifested.
    • Chankra Kunda, a holy tank, is associated with the temple, where devotees take a holy dip during festive occasions.
    • The temple remains open until 6 PM.
  • Puranic Significance:
    • Sage Narada searched for the best theertha (water body) across the three worlds, visiting Kailasa (abode of Shiva), Parkadal (Kshir Sagar) (abode of Vishnu), and finally the water body in Naimisha Forest.
    • The central deity here is believed to have been worshipped by Sudharma and the devas (celestial deities).
    • Indra, the king of devas, once lost his kingdom to the asura Vritra, who was invulnerable to all weapons. Seeking help, Vishnu revealed that only a weapon made from the bones of Sage Dadhichi could defeat Vritra.
    • Dadhichi agreed to sacrifice himself, and his bones were used to create the Vajrayudha (thunderbolt), which helped the devas defeat Vritra and restore Indra’s kingdom.
    • Another legend tells of Brahma, the god of creation, bringing a ring from darbha grass and directing the sages to perform penance where the ring fell, which is believed to be Naimisaranya.
    • After performing penance, Vishnu appeared to the sages and accepted their offerings.
  • Special Features:
    • Sankaracharya and poet Surdas are believed to have visited this place. Sage Suta, the author of the 18 Puranas, is said to have lived here and delivered his teachings to the sages.
    • The central deity is believed to preside over the forest, and rituals are performed for the forest itself.
    • The temple is revered in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham by Thirumangai Azhwar in ten hymns.
    • It is classified as a Divyadesam, one of the 108 Vishnu temples in the Vaishnava canon.
    • On new moon days, a large number of devotees purify themselves by taking a dip in the holy well. A dip on a Monday new moon day, followed by offering to Lalitha, is believed to cleanse devotees of all sins.
  • Festivals:
    • Rama Navami is celebrated with great fervor at the temple.
