Legends:
- According to legend, Lord Shiva came to the temple to vanquish the three tyrannical sons of King Dharuga, who were causing torment to the people. The sons had built forts of Gold, Silver, and Iron to protect themselves. With the assistance of Sage Agastya, Lord Shiva defeated them, earning the name “Tiru Pura Nadar,” the vanquisher of three. Upon the request of the people, Lord Shiva decided to stay at Tirupuranathar Thenmalai to protect them.
- Over time, the main lingam disappeared into the earth and was later discovered by a Palayakkarar (Poligar King) when a strong wind brought dust and leaves to the spot where the lingam was buried. He then built the temple, and it became a tradition to pray to the Lord before taking up conquests.
