Introduction
Thattankuttai Pachathannir Mariamman Temple is located in the Thattankuttai village, Namakkal circle, Namakkal district, Tamil Nadu. This is a famous Pachathannir (Green water) Mariamman temple near Rasipuram in Namakal vattam. This temple festival is celebrated every year in Panguni month. It is customary to light a temple lamp in water during this festival. During the festival, early in the morning, the priests take holy water from the temple well and bring water in a jug to light the lamp in the water. At that time, they would drain all the oil from the burning lamp before Amman and pour water from the well into the lamp. Then, when the lamp is lit, the lamp will burn in the water as well as in the oil. This temple is about 8 km from Namakkal Bus Station.
Puranic Significance
Once in ancient times, the oil in the temple lamp ran out, and then the temple priest asked for money to buy oil to light the lamp for Amman. To that, the Lord said with a kind of despair that there was no money and that the mighty Mary herself would pour water and lights the lamp.
Likewise the temple priests poured water and lit the lamp. Then the lamp that was lit in front of Amman has gone out. Then the temple priests and the public were amazed to see the miracle of the lamp burning in the water. Hence since then Maryamman here is known as ‘Pachathannir Maryamman’ by the devotees. The Temple is believed to be 500 years old.
