Puranic Significance

After chanting the Ashtakshara mantra preached by Bhudevi Durvasar, she received two large kundalas while rising from the Tamiraparani. She received the title of Sri Perai. In Panguni Pavurnami, Lord Shiva received the name Makaranedungukulaikkathan to present to Perumal two fish-shaped kundalas received at Tamiraparani The name Thiruperai is derived from the name Bhumidevi Sri Perai.
