Introduction

Sulur Vaidyanatha Swami Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Sulur village, Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu. Here the primary deity is called as Vaidyanatha swami and Mother is called as Thayyal Nayaki. Lord Vaideeswarar is the authority over the planet Mars. This temple is considered equal to Vaideeswarar temple in Nagapattinam district. This is the centre for those seeking relief from the adverse impact of planets Rahu and Ketu.

Puranic Significance

Kongu region was a sovereign state with 24 divisions. Vayaraikal Nadu, Palladam, Sulur and Pollachi were parts of this land. Sulur is 18 km far from Coimbatore on the Tiruchi Road. Sural is a plant belonging to the grass family. As this grass grew abundantly in this place, it was called Suralur. It became Sulur in the days that followed. Karikal Chola, found a swayambu in this place during a deforestation project to create plain land. He built a small temple, installed the Swayambu and conducted the consecration too. According to the Chola Purva Pattayam released by the Government of Tamilnadu in the year 1950, Karikal Chola renovated 36 Shiva temples from Muttam in the Noyyal river area stretching up to Karur including the one in Sulur.

The temple is situated south of Noyyal River and the Sulur tank area in a pleasant environment. Though it is facing east, for the convenience of the devotees, an entrance is built on the south side also. It is to be noted that any temple on the banks of river or other water source is considered very holy on three aspects Murthy, Sthala and Theertham. The devotee can feel divine vibrations here. Diseases that could not be cured even by a qualified doctor got cured here with the grace of Lord Vaidyanatha Swami. A bank employee in Tiruppur was suffering from small pimple like boils throughout the body causing an ugly appearance. Doctors could not cure him. He came to this temple, prayed to Mother Thayyal Nayaki with oil and performed abishek with that oil to Lord Vaidyanathaswar. That oil Prasad was offered to him. He consumed the abishek oil continuously for months and got completely cured without any trace of the illness he suffered, according to devotees visiting this temple regularly.

Beliefs

Devotees pray to Lord for removal of obstacles in wedding talks and for relief from the adverse impact of Rahu-Ketu aspects in their lives. The youth or the girl concerned in the wedding matter, shall apply gingely oil to Lord Nandikeswara, garland Him and wear the same garland. Then they take part in the pujas performed for Lord Vaidyanatha Swami. This prayer shall solemnize the wedding sooner. The Nandhi is therefore praised as Kalyana Guna Nandikeswara.

Special Features

Lord Vaidheeswara is authority for Sevvai-Mars planet. The temple is considered equal to the Vaideeswarar temple in Nagapattinam district. This is the prayer and relief centre for those seeking remedies from the negative impact of Rahu and Ketu planets.

For funding the daily pujas without any breaks, King Veera Chozhan III liberally contributed by way of tax free schemes during the years 1168-1196 as epigraphic evidences show. Therefore, the antiquity of the temple dates back to 850 years. The Swayambu Moolavar Vaidyanatha Swami is naturally very ancient. In the years that followed the temple was extended with additional shrines for all sub-deities and today it is big in size and fame. Lord Vinayaka under the Arasu tree with planets Rahu and Ketu is next to the Deepasthamba. Lord Muruga with His consorts Valli and Deivanai, Lord Vaidyanatha Swami and Mother Thayyal Nayaki grace the devotees from the respective main shrines. It is noteworthy that Lord Vinayaka graces the devotees from three places as Maha Ganapathy, Arasu tree Vinayaka and Vanni tree Vinayaka, with planets Ragu and Ketu. The temple has shrines for Lords Aiyappan, Dakshinamurthy, Chandikeswara, Santana Bhairava and Mothers Durga, Mahalashmi and Saraswathi and Sun God, Moon and planet Saneeswara. Lord Vaidyanatha Swami appeared in the dream of His devotee Ganapathi Ammal and asked her to get the two-horned coconut in her farm. The woman was waiting for the sunrise. Coconuts in the tree would fall naturally when ripe. She wondered how it could still stick to the tree. She called her servant to bring the coconut of the description given by Lord. He also brought the coconut with two horns and offered it to the puja in the temple.
