Introduction

The Srikakulam Andhra Mahavishnu Temple, located in Srikakulam village of Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and holds several unique and historically significant features.

Location: The temple is situated in Srikakulam village, located in Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh.

Deity: The main deity of the temple is Lord Vishnu, and He is referred to as Andhra Maha Vishnu or Srikakulandhra Maha Vishnu. He is depicted holding a Shankha (conch) in his right hand and a Chakra (discus) in his left hand, representing peace and protection. The temple also houses an original Salagrama Mala, a significant religious artifact used for decorating the deity, which can also be found in the Tirumala and Ryali temples.

Historical Significance: The temple’s main sanctum has historical roots dating back to the time of the Satavahana emperors, possibly from the 2nd or 3rd century BC. It is considered one of the most ancient temple sites in the country, showcasing the temple’s rich history.

Beliefs and Significance:

  • The temple is known as a Parihara Sthalam for addressing doshas (afflictions) associated with specific Nakshatras (constellations) such as Aslesha, Revathi, and Jyeshta, as well as Budha Graha doshas.
  • Taking a dip in the Krishna River before visiting the temple on Mukti Ekadasi is believed to cleanse one of their sins.

Historical Legends: The temple’s name and deity, Andhra Maha Vishnu, are linked to a legendary ruler known for his association with a divine savior, Lord Maha Vishnu.

Idol Characteristics: Lord Vishnu is depicted with specific characteristics such as holding a Shankha and Chakra, and notably, Krishna does not find a place in the dasavatara (ten incarnations of Vishnu) at this temple. The dasavatara here includes Matsya, Koorma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parasurama, Rama, Balarama, Buddha, and Kalki.

Renovations and Neglect: The temple has undergone renovations and reconstruction throughout its history. The Cholas are credited with reconstructing the temple, having found the idol in the Krishna River bed. A major reconstruction took place during Krishna Pushkarams in 1992. The temple had, unfortunately, fallen into neglect despite its considerable landholdings.

King Andhra Vishnu: According to legend, King Andhra Vishnu constructed a large wall connecting Sri Sailam, Bheemeshwaram, and Kaleshwaram, and these walls are believed to house Lord Shiva.

Devotees’ Aspirations: Devotees visit this temple with various aspirations, including salvation, wealth, relief from diseases, the purchase of vehicles, and gaining knowledge.

Festivals: The temple’s main festival is the marriage celebration of Lord Vishnu and Andal, marked by a grand procession that draws thousands of devotees to the town. Mukkoti Ekadasi and other special poojas are also celebrated with enthusiasm at the temple.

The Srikakulam Andhra Mahavishnu Temple is not only historically significant but also holds unique features in its deity’s representation and religious artifacts. Devotees from across the country visit this temple to seek blessings and fulfill their spiritual aspirations.
