Introduction

Venugopalasamy temple situated near Avinashi in Tirupur district. A 12km drive from Avinashi takes one to a sleepy hamlet of Ramanathapuram where a temple, said to be around 700 years old, is lying in ruins. Faced with neglect, the Venugopalsamy temple premises now wears a deserted look. The splendid architectural walls of the shrine could crumble anytime. The idols inside the temple are also missing. The wall around the 85 cent land of the temple campus has been damaged. Trees and shrubs have grown inside the sanctum sanctorum. Poojas and other rituals have not been held for the past many years. P. Ganesan of Gurumangala Sakthi Siddha Peedam, who lives adjacent to the temple and had been conducting pujas till 1999, told “The Hindu” that the temple once had the idols of Krishna, Rukmini, Gajalakshmi and Anjaneyar. “Idols were missing during 2000-2004.
