Puranic Significance
Pundareeka rishi was on his way back from Kanchi after visiting Brahmma’s Ashwamedha Yagam. It was Vaikundha egadesi day and hence Pundareeka desperately wanted to have darshan of Lord Vishnu. Seeing a temple and assuming that to be a Vishnu temple, he took bath in the temple pond was in a hurry to have darshan of Lord Vishnu. After entering the temple, to his dismay, he found it was a Shiva temple (Lord Shiva here originally was called Doosheshswarar) and was utterly disappointed. Worried that he may not be able to get the darshan of Lord Vishnu on Vaikundha egadesi, he left the temple. When he was leaving, an elderly brahmin clarified to him it was indeed a Vishnu temple and persuaded him to get inside the temple and to check for himself. Half-heartedly Pundareeka rishi came inside the temple to double check and was pleasantly shocked and surprised on seeing Lord Vishnu standing on top of Avudaiyar (on which Sivalingams are installed)Indeed what a nice way to demonstrate to Pundareeka and to the world the great philosophy that all Gods are one and the same. Since Lord gave darshan to Pundareeka, Lord is named as “Prasanna” Venkateswara Perumal.
