Introduction
Sothriyam Kalahastheeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Located in the Sothriyam village, Sirkazhi circle, Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu. Sothriyam is a variant of Surothriyam. Surothriyam means the land given to the recites of the Vedas, which can be enjoyed as long as they remain. During the Maratha kings, Surothriyas were given in many places; one of them was on the south bank of the Kodal near Kondal village, 11 km west of Sirkahi.
After the destruction of the temple in this village, they have taken only the one linga murthy that was left and set up a platform in a beautiful copper shed and turned it into a temple. There is a large linga murthy of Lord Kalahtheeswarar, and there is a small Nandi and an altar in front of it. They have placed a Durga towards the north. Only these murtis can be seen in the temple. The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old.
