Introduction

The Kaneshvar Mahadev Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located in Sihawa, in the Dhamtari District of Chhattisgarh, India. It is situated on the northern banks of the Mahanadhi River and can be reached via the Kanker to Nagari Route.

  • Historical Significance: The region of Kanker was ruled by the Somavanshi kings from the 11th century AD to the first half of the 14th century AD. The temple group, known as the Karneswar Mahadev Temple Group, contains several significant temples, including the prominent Karneswar Temple, the Ram Janaki Temple, and others dedicated to deities like Ganesha, Durga, and the Sun.
  • Condition: While these temples are historically significant, they are in a dilapidated condition, and many are in need of restoration and preservation.
  • Karneswar Temple: Among the temples in the group, the Karneswar Temple is the most prominent. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
  • Ram Janaki Temple: This temple houses new marble idols of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshman, two Vishnu idols, and an ancient idol of the Sun.
  • Other Temples: The third and fourth temples in the group are dedicated to Ganesha and Durga. The fifth temple is a smaller one dedicated to the Sun.
  • Temple Pond: There is a temple pond located nearby, which may have been used for various rituals and offerings.
  • Remains of Ancient Vishnu Temple: On the banks of the Mahanadhi River, one can find the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. According to belief, this temple was constructed by Queen Bhopal Devi of Karna Dev. These temples are constructed in the Kalingan architectural style.
  • Protected Monuments: The Kaneshvar Mahadev Temple and its surrounding temple group are designated as protected monuments by the Archaeological Survey of India, emphasizing their historical and cultural significance.

The temple complex, with its various deities and architectural elements, reflects the rich heritage of the region and provides valuable insights into its historical and cultural past.
