Introduction
- The Laxminarayan Temple, also known as Birla Mandir, is a Hindu temple in Delhi dedicated to Laxminarayan (Vishnu with his consort Lakshmi).
- Built by Jugal Kishore Birla between 1933 and 1939, it was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi.
- The temple covers 7.5 acres and includes shrines, fountains, gardens, and the Geeta Bhawan for discourses.
- It attracts thousands of devotees, especially during Janmashtami and Diwali.
Puranic Significance:
- Construction started in 1933 by industrialists Baldeo Das Birla and Jugal Kishore Birla.
- Foundation stone was laid by Maharaj Udaybhanu Singh, and Pandit Vishwanath Shastri guided the building process.
- Mahatma Gandhi inaugurated the temple in 1939, with the condition that it would be open to all castes.
- This temple is the first in a series of Birla Temples built across India.
Special Features:
- The main temple houses idols of Lord Narayan (Vishnu) and Goddess Lakshmi.
- Smaller shrines are dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, Hanuman, and Lord Buddha.
- The left dome (shikhar) contains a shrine for Goddess Durga, symbolizing Shakti, the power.
