Introduction

Shanmughapuram Sri Veera Anjaneyar Temple is dedicated to lord Anjaneyar, located in the Shanmughapuram village, Pollachi circle, Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu. Here the presiding deity is called as Sri Veera Anjaneyar. The Temple is believed to be more than 1000 years old.

Puranic Significance

Sri Anjaneya, as an efficient, powerful and sincere companioncum-servant of Lord Rama, was returning back from Lanka after meeting Mother Sita abducted by Ravana. He relaxed on this rock. He is a swayambu gracing the devotees here. During the rule of the Cholas, the Swayambu was discovered and a small temple was built for popular worship, according to hearsay stories.

People believe that worshipping Sri Veera Anjaneya in this temple benefits the devotee in many ways. The problems they face in marriage alliance are solved. Any adverse effects on children disappear. The devotee develops noble habits, health, popularity in his/her doings, fearlessness, disease-free life without any physical weakness, fluency in speech etc. The devotee is also freed from debt burdens and enemies. Devotees’ offer Tulsi, betel and Vada garlands with flakes (Aval) mixed with sugar as nivedhana and perform special abishek to Sri Veera Anjaneya. They also offer butter bath.

Special Features

As all of us know, Sri Anjaneya flew to Lanka crossing many hills. Shanmughapuram in Coimbatore district is believed to be a place where he placed his foot prints. Citing the occasion, a five feet long idol is made for him on a rock on Palaru.

Sri Anjaneya in the temple is five feet long in a reclining form gracing the devotees in the middle of Palaru. He is a swayambumurthi. Not as a sub-deity in the prakara of the temple, He is the presiding deity of the temple. He is facing Lanka. The temple is situated in the foot hills of Govinda hills and Thadakachi hills where Sage Viswamitra performed penance. Lord Vinayaka graces with two faces. There is a small spring-like water spot near this place. According to some who claim to have seen two snakes bathe in this spring daily, even now, go to the sanctum sanctorum and worship the Lord. There are shrines for Lord Yoga Narasimha, Chakarathazhwar and Vinayaka with twin face.

Festivals

Sri Anjaneya Jayanthi, new moon days in Tamil months of Aadi (July-August) and Thai (January-February), Saturdays in Purattasi (September-October) are festival days in the temples. Also, Deepavali in October-November, Pongal in January, Sri Krishna Jayanthi in August-September, Vaikunda Ekadasi in December-January, Tamil and English New Year days are observed as festival days in the temple.
