Introduction
The Valeeswarar Temple is a significant temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Sevur Village in Avinashi Taluk, Tiruppur District, Tamil Nadu, India. The main deity of the temple is known as Valeeswarar or Kapaleeswarar, and the goddess is worshipped as Aram Valartha Nayaki, Dharmasamvardhini, and Araperunselvi. Lord Valeeswarar is represented by the sacred Lingam.
Puranic Significance
- The temple has a long history and is believed to have been constructed during the 12th century AD. It stands as one of the ancient temples in the Kongu Nadu region.
- Legends and Myths:
- Lord Vali’s Worship: The temple is associated with the legend of Vali, the Vanara king from the epic Ramayana. Vali had received a curse, and he prayed to Lord Shiva in this place to seek redemption from the curse. The temple is named Valeeswarar in honor of Vali’s devotion.
- Kapaleeswarar Name: The temple is also known as Kapaleeswarar because the area was predominantly influenced by the sect of Shaivites known as Kaapalika
- Monday Prayers: It is believed that a devoted carpenter observed a Vratham (ritual observance) on five consecutive Mondays and visited this temple. On the fifth Monday, he encountered a mysterious Brahmin who helped him. Since then, it is believed that if a devotee visits the temple on five consecutive Mondays, their prayers will be answered.
- Dharma Samvardhini: The goddess, also known as Dharma Samvardhini, is believed to have played a role in restoring justice and dharma to the community by defeating a demon named Veeman.

People facing obstacles in wedding proposals, problems about children’s welfare pray to Lord Shiva, Goddess Aram Valartha Nayaki and Lord Muruga. Performing special pujas, abishek and offering vastras – new clothes.

- Various Names: The place where the temple is situated has had various names, including Rishabapuri, Sevur, and Maatoor, which referred to the abundance of cattle like cows in the area. Additionally, it is said that the village was named Mattur after a belief that Nandi, Lord Shiva’s bull, worshipped here.
- Karikala Chola’s Visit: Karikala Chola, a prominent king from the early Chola dynasty, is believed to have regained his Chola Kingdom after praying to Lord Shiva at this temple.

- The temple faces east and is adorned with a five-tier Rajagopuram (entrance tower).
- A Garuda Thoon (Deepa Sthambam) is located in front of the temple, featuring a sculpture of Vali worshipping Lord Shiva.

- Unique Nataraja Shrine: The Nataraja shrine at the temple is unique, combining features from Natarajas in five different temples, making it an important site for the Arudhra Darshanam festival.
