Introduction
Senthangudi Thirunageswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Senthangudi town, Koothanallur circle, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. Senthangudi village is a small town; here the Shiva temple is located near a large pond on the road leading to Ramanathapuram from Senthangudi. This is an East facing Shiva temple. Here the Presiding deity is called as Lord – Thirunageswarar and Mother is called as Nagavalli.
Puranic Significance
History says, Because of the worship of Seshenaga called Ananda among the Ashtanagas, it became Seshenakudi and now it became Senthangudi.
The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old. The Lord is facing east and is a medium size lingamurti. Ambigai is facing south side. A long tin shed is placed in between the two sanctums. There is a Nandi altar towards the Lord. Karurai Kottam has Vinayagar Tenmugan and Lingodpa Durga. The prakaram has separate temples for Maha ganapati valli samedhamurugan and Mahalakshmi. There is an idol of Ambikai on a small platform next to Murugan who is unknown.
Since the two Lords are enlightened by the name of Naga, loved ones who are afflicted with sin will get rid of sin if they pray to this Lord for anointing and worshiping. As his greatness is not known to the outside world, it remains a temple of worship for a time.
