Introduction
Semmangudi Sundareswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Semmangudi village, Nannilam circle, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. This place can be reached by going one km to the east of Aniyur in the north of Thiruvizhimizhalai. He is an ardent devotee of Lord Kuberan. The temple, which had been in disrepair for a long time without the outside world’s knowledge, is now newly built. Vinayagar and Murugan are present at the gate of Lord-Sundereswarar-Lord-Soundaranayake. A large mandapam and a long copper shed have also been constructed in front of the Lord. There is only Tenmugan as the deity of the sanctum. There is a beautiful lingam under a tree on the northern side of Sandesar. There are no statues or sculptures commemorating Kubera.
Puranic Significance
The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old.Once he performed a long penance towards Lord Shiva, and after that penance Lord Shiva and Parvati made him the ruler of all the world’s riches. “Kubera…distribute it according to the sweat of the people you work with and according to their destiny”. She had received the eight powers, and entrusted them to Sanganidhi and Padumanidhi. Kuberan received these two treasures as his right and left hands and he has been guarding them till today. This is the place where Kubera and Sangha Nidhipadumanidhi came to worship. So Sanga-Padumanitikudi is now called Semmangudi.
