Introduction

The Malai Mandala Perumal Temple, also known as the Girivardaraja Perumal Temple, is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu in Sathurangapatnam Village near Kalpakkam, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.

Location: The temple is situated in Sathurangapatnam Village, near Kalpakkam, which is in the Kanchipuram District of Tamil Nadu. It’s located about 15 kilometers south of Thiru Kadal Mallai Divya Desam and a couple of kilometers ahead of Kalpakkam.

Presiding Deity: The main deity of the temple is Lord Varadaraja Perumal, often referred to as Giri Varadar. He is in a walking posture, with His feet at the same level as the head of Garuda, who is the divine vehicle of Lord Vishnu.

Significance:

This temple is considered a Prarthana Sthalam for liberation from Sarpa Dosham (afflictions related to serpents).
It’s known for its unique idols and sculptures, including the representation of Lord Varadaraja in a walking posture, Lord Lakshmi Narayana (a single-stone sculpture), and Lord Ranganatha in a lying posture.
Special lamp: A unique lamp with aesthetic beauty is a prominent feature of the temple, often lit with ghee to seek auspiciousness.

Historical Significance:

The temple is believed to have been built around the year 850 AD and has historical connections with the Vijayanagara Empire.
It was originally dedicated to Lakshmi Narayana but later became associated with Varadaraja Perumal, who is said to have appeared here as a Swayambu Murthy (self-manifested deity).

Legends and Beliefs:

The temple’s name, Sathurangapatnam, has its roots in the Vijayanagara period. It is believed to have once been called Raja Narayana Patnam, named after a minister of the Chozha dynasty. Over time, it evolved into Sathurangapatnam.
The temple is associated with Bhoothath Azhvaar, the first of the Azhvaars, who is believed to have stayed here.

Festivals:

Vaikunta Ekadasi: This festival is grandly celebrated in the temple in December-January.
Maasi Magam: On this day, Lord Varadaraja Perumal leaves the temple for a street procession, culminating in a Theertha Vaari at the sea, organized by the local fishermen community.
