Introduction

Saravanampatti Saravanapureeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Saravanampatti village, Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu. The mythological name of this town is Siravanapuram. Scholars say that it got the name ‘Siravanapuram’ because it is a crowded city. Later it known as Saravanampatti. Here the Presiding deity is called as Saravanapureeswarar and Mother is called as Shivagami ambal. The temple is located opposite Saravanam Patti, Police Station on the Coimbatore – Sathyamangalam highway.

Puranic Significance

Saravana is one of the names of the six-faced God Murugan. It is somewhat strange that there is a town with the same name and there is an exhibition called Saravanapureeswarar. The temple here is Eight hundred years old. Muruga’s name is Sevvannan. Due to Murugan living on a hill here, this area became known as Sevvannanpatti and later became Saravanampatti. Lord Siravanamapureeswarar suyambu appeared in this temple. Sivakami Ambal, Dandayuthapani and Lord Vinayaka were also enshrined in this temple.

Special Features

This temple, which is situated towards the east, was originally a running temple. Later, it was replaced with plaster of lime and plastered with planes, and after that it was repaired at various times and converted into a stone temple. In front of the temple there is a lamp post with mandapam.

Its upper facade is decorated with gold sculptures of Vinayagar, Pradoshanayagar, Valli-theivaya with Marmurugan, Sivakamiyam. The Munamamandapam has entrances opposite to esan and opposite to Dandayuthapaniswami. To the north of these shrines is Thandayuthapaniswami sanctum. In the sanctum sanctorum, where the Dandayuthapaniswami is standing, holding the danda in his right hand and keeping his left hand on his hip, he is showing a wonderful beauty. There are four shrines in the prakaram, Thiruvarulvinayakar, Kannimar, Vaideeswarar, Chandikeswarar, Adithandayuthapani, Kalabhairavaar and Saneeswarar. Dakshinamurthy, Lingotpavar, Brahma, Saraswati, Durgai and Mahalakshmi have settled in the temple. As you enter through the gate to Esan, Nandyam sits majestically, Dwarapalakas stand watch on both sides. Another Nandi deity is enshrined in the inner hall.

On the north side of the Mahamandapam there is a shrine of Lord Shiva to the south. Sivakamiyam is standing with a black lotus flower in her right hand and with her left hand hanging down. The Temple is believed to be 1300 years old.
