Sri Nithya Sumangali Mariamman
Introduction
- Location: Situated in Rasipuram, Namakkal, Tamil Nadu. The temple is about 1000 years old.
- Deity: The presiding deity is Nitya Sumangali Mariamman, who is a Swayambumurthy (self-manifested) deity.
Puranic Significance:
- The temple is believed to have originated when a farmer discovered a bleeding spot while tilling the land. Upon digging, a Swayambu deity was found.
- Mother Mari Amman is said to have communicated with her devotees, instructing them to build a temple for her at the site.
- A wooden post with three branches (Kambam) is planted before the goddess during festivals. It is believed that Mariamman has a direct view of this post and hence, is worshipped as Nitya Sumangali Amman.
- Women believe that worshipping Mari Amman will bless them with longevity in their married life and ensure their Mangalsutra stays intact throughout their life.
- A special puja is performed for women seeking a child boon, particularly during the Aipasi festival. The old Kambam is replaced with a new one, and prayers and offerings of curd rice are made for the child boon.
- The temple is surrounded by four hills: Kollimalai, Alavai Malai, Nainamalai, and Bodhamalai.
- Ambal is decorated with flowers (Poochattu) during the Aipasi festival. Worship during this time is considered especially auspicious.
Beliefs:
- Devotees pray to Mari Amman for the cure from diseases, particularly vision problems.
- Angapradakshinam (circumambulation with fire pots) is a common practice among devotees seeking blessings.
Special Features:
- Cooked raw rice is offered as nivedhana to the goddess.
- Vinayaka in the temple is known as Anugnai Vinayaka.
- The vimana (tower) of the temple has a hexagonal design.
- The temple also has a swing mandap, where the footprints of Ambica are present. Women seeking child boons move the swing while praying.
- The shrine is dedicated to Vinayaka and Muruga in the prakara.
Festivals:
- The temple celebrates a 15-day festival during the month of Aipasi (October-November). This festival is an important occasion, especially for women seeking blessings for marital and child-related wishes.
