Introduction
Location:
- Located in Vandaraguppe village, near Channapatna, Karnataka.
- 55 km from Bangalore, off the Bangalore-Mysore State Highway, 7 km after Ramanagar and 3 km before Channapatna.
Presiding Deity:
- The main deity is Lord Anjaneya Swami, a 5.5-foot-tall idol with a unique moustache, which is rarely seen on Hanuman idols.
Puranic Significance:
- Legend has it that Sage Vyasaraya discovered a rock resembling Lord Hanuman and, recognizing its special properties, installed the idol after performing rituals.
- The idol emerged as Swayambu (self-manifested) from red rocks, fulfilling Sage Vyasaraya’s vision, including the mustache feature.
- The name “Kengal” in Kannada means ‘red stone.’
- The temple is said to be more than 1300 years old and was initially built by the Hoysala kings but later fell into disrepair.
- The temple was renovated by former Karnataka Chief Minister Sri Hanumanthaiya, bringing it back to prominence.
- A fascinating phenomenon: over the years, the idol of Lord Hanuman has shifted its orientation from facing North to now facing East.
