Introduction
Rajagopalapuram Sundareswarar Temple is dedicated to lord Shiva, located in the Rajagopalapuram town, Kuttalam circle, Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu.Kutthalam is located on Kumbakonam Road, 12 km west of Mayiladuthurai. There are five great Shiva temples in this town. This Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple is also one of them. The temple is situated in a private area called Rajagopalapuram to the west of Kuttalam railway station. Here the Presiding deity is calledas Sundareswarar and Mother is called as Meenakshi.
Puranic Significance
The Temple is believed to be 1500 years old. Here the temple is facing to the east side, after many years of efforts, the temple is fully completed and on display. The Lord Sundareswarar is facing east and Mother is facing South side. Directly opposite the Shiva temple is the Balavinayakar temple facing north. Both the temples have been renovated recently. There is no rajagopuram in the facade, the entrance is decorated with the image of Lord and Goddess seated on a bull. Inside the entrance are the sun and moon towards the west.
The area up to the roof called prastram is completely built of black stone. The front hall is also made of black stone and the south facing shrine is made of brick. Lord Meenakshi Sundareswarar is in Periyalinga Murthy form. Vinayagar Subramaniya is at the gate of her sanctum. There are only Tenmukha and Durga as tribal deities. Prakara temples are dedicated to Vinayagar Murugan and Lakshmi. Navagrahas are in the northeast side of the temple.
