Puranic Significance
The name of the Lord here is Naganathaswamy. It is believed that the goddess Shantanayaki in this temple is worshiped even today by Nagarani, who lives there. It is believed that people with Sarpa Dosha, Ketu Graha Dosha in their horoscope and those who are not blessed with children come to this temple and worship Naganath Swamy and Goddess Devishan Nayaki and worship the Nagarani as well, which will remove the Sarpa Doshas and get what they need. It is believed that when Lord Naganath Swamy is worshiped on Mahashivaratri, the head part extends to the Nagor temple and the tail part extends to the southern part of the temple. After Mahashivaratri, the two snakes worshiping the Lord will stay there till the next new moon, and on the new moon day, after bathing in the nearby Naga Theertha, they will complete the pooja and have a vision of the Lord.
The Lord is towards the East and the Goddess is towards the South. There is a long-fronted hall in which Nandi faces the Lord. Adjacent to the sanctum sanctorum, idols of Nagaraja and Nagarani are carved and worshiped. Among the Karurai Kothams there is Brahma Durga, Vinayagar and Mukan Lingothavar. Bhairava temple is situated from north to south. In the northeast is Navagraha. This temple, which is five hundred years old, has been destroyed by the passage of time, so they have built it completely anew. It is believed that Naganath Swamy, the head of this temple, is still worshiped by Nagaraja and Nagaraani of Nagaloka.
