Puranic Significance
The temple is said to be more than 1500 years old. A gate to the east and a gate to the south are in the wall, above which is a scene of the Lord with his family. The East facing sanctum sanctorum, Lord Lingamurthy is of medium size and has a small sanctum. The sanctum sanctorum is built of black stone up to the upper level, and a hall connects the two sanctum sanctorum. Outside is a Nandi Mandapam with black stone pillars and altar. Under it is the Ganesha sanctum.
Tenmukhan is the only one in Karurai Kotam. Vinayagar has a beautiful sanctum to the south-west as the prakara shrines, with a small front hall. A temple to Murugan is located on the north-west facade as well as a two-pillared front hall with a beautiful peacock. Between the two sanctuaries some nagars are placed against the wall. There is a well in the north-east as a small shrine of Sun and Moon. The temple is largely unmaintained. The temples around this town are proud to be associated with the story of Mahabharata. This temple is worshiped by Lord Dharuma.
