Introduction
The Mathigya Stupa is located on the south side of Sri Ksetra on Narrow Island in between the two concentric channels of the city’s moats. It comprises a three-meter high square terrace measuring about 15 to 16 meters on a side, flanked by four stairways extending five meters from each side of the base. A circular stupa, probably shaped like a beehive, once stood on the base, though only the lowermost courses of brick remain.
The site was excavated from 1927-28 by Charles Duroiselle, yielding burial urns and several plaques depicting men riding on horseback. The overall design of the stupa is similar to those found at Taxila in present-day Pakistan, as well as Nagarjunakonda in southeast India.
