The presiding deity, Punya Koteeswarar, and Goddess Bhuvaneshwari are revered by devotees who visit this ancient and significant temple. It is one of the 108 Shiva temples mentioned in the sacred text, Kanchi Puranam, and is also known as Punniyakodeesam.
