Introduction
Punavasal Madhavapureeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Punavasal village, Mannargudi taluk, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. On the Thiruvarur – Mannargudi road, after crossing the river bridge, take the left hand side and after half a km, there is Punavasal village. This town is on the south bank of the river. On the left side of the road is a big temple, more than an acre with a surrounding wall to the east side. There is a large pond in front of the temple and another pond to the south.
Here the presiding deity is called as Madhavapureeswarar and Mother is called as Mangalambal. There is a small gate on the eastern front of the temple. Here the lord Shiva in the east-facing sanctum and the mother in the south-facing sanctum sanctorum. A conical hall connects the two sanctuaries. On one side of the sanctum sanctorum gate is the beautiful Vinayaka and on the other side Valli deiyanai samedha murugan. According to inscriptions, the temple was built in 12th century. The temple has started decaying without maintenance. There are cracks everywhere in the walls of the temple like the walls of the sanctum sanctorum.
