Introduction
Pulimedu Madhyathananeeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Located in the Pulimedu village, Chidambaram circle, Tamil Nadu. Thillai Thalapurana says that the place where Vyagrapadar built his hut is called Pulimedu in the south of Thillai, the place where sage Vyagrapadar did penance. Here is the Madhyanthananeeswarar Temple, where Sage Pulikal and his father Madhyantana were worshipped. A small temple towards the east, there is a Suthai sculpture of Lord Ambika and Vyagrabhadra above the entrance. There are only sanctuaries of Lord and Goddess. The presiding deity is called as Lord Madhyanthananeeswarar and Mother is called as Goddess Mangala Nayaki.
Puranic Significance
The temple is said to be more than 1500 years old. Ganesha Murugan is present at the sanctum gate. There are some inscriptions around the sanctum. There is a well and Navagraha in the north-east. In front of the temple is a large pond called Pulimedu Theertha. Pujas are held twice in the morning and evening in the temple. At present, due to the lack of maintenance of the pond, waste water stagnates. The encroachments around the tirtha pond should be completely removed and the pond should be thoroughly cleaned.
An inscription near this temple is a boundary stone. The inscription also mentions Tirubhoo mandapam which was a mandapam near Pulikal Munivar Temple which is completely destroyed and some parts are buried in Pulimedu Tirthakulam. This Theertha Pond has the speciality of dissolving Gandhiji’s ashes.
