Puranic Significance
The temple is said to be more than 1500 years old. There were 18 Shivalayams, 18 Theerthas and 18 Thiruveethis in this place earlier. Now only four are left including the Gangatheeswarar temple. This temple is located in the north-east of the city and is called Pulavanallur. As the old temple is completely dilapidated, the works have started from the basic construction. However, since it is a small town, the number of those who extend help is less. The work has been going on for some years. About three-quarters of the work have been completed, only the façade and painting are left. Shiva Lingam alone is in its own image. All the other deities are kept in a small shed and eternal prayers are performed. On the south side of the temple there is a Theertham called Karuvangkulam.
