- The temple is approximately 45 km from Pratapgarh and 145 km from Ayodhya, situated in Bela Pratapgarh.
- Believed to be 1000 years old, the temple is considered one of the twelve Jyotirlingas mentioned in the Shiva Purana.
- The holy Shivling of Baba Ghuisarnath is enshrined in the sanctum of the temple.
Puranic Significance
- According to the Shiva Purana, a Brahmin named Brahmavetta Sudharm and his wife Sudeha lived near a lake but were childless, causing Sudeha great sorrow.
- To resolve this, Sudeha married her sister Ghushma to her husband. Ghushma began making and worshipping 101 lingas, ultimately being blessed with a son.
- This led to Ghushma’s pride and Sudeha’s jealousy, prompting Sudeha to kill Ghushma’s son out of envy and dispose of the body in the lake.
- After performing daily prayers, Ghushma noticed blood on the bed, leading to a confrontation with Sudeha. Despite the horror, Ghushma remained devoted, reciting “Shiva-Shiva.”
- When Ghushma went to discharge the lingas, she miraculously saw her son. Lord Shiva then appeared, revealing that Ghushma’s devotion had pleased him.
- Ghushma, in her compassion, asked Lord Shiva to forgive Sudeha. Pleased with her generosity, Lord Shiva agreed to reside in the form of a Jyotirling at the location and took on the name Ghushmeshwar, with the lake subsequently named Sai.
