Puranic Significance
A demon called Marasura who received many boons and great strength from the Lord through severe penance. Because of his boon he tormented the three worlds with arrogance and conceit. The restless people went to Parashakti and appealed. To the request of the devotees, Parashakti came to earth in anger. Then she caught hold of both the legs of the demon and lifted him up and pressed his head to the ground and killed him. She graces the small temple in the Poonthottam site. Centuries ago the area was a small village. All that existed here were thatched huts. People who lived in this area had to travel long distances to find a doctor even if they had minor health problems. It was only when they regretted that there was no one to protect them, who were suffering economically, Muthumariyamman came here as a boon.
Since the beginning of worshiping the mother, many health problems have been solved in the village. All their economic facilities and huts were converted into log houses and terraced houses. From that time till now no distress befalls them. People fully believe that Mariamman is the reason for their good life and development.
