Introduction
This second Siva Temple is the oldest Hindu shrine found in the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka. It was built by King Raja Raja I (985 – 1014 A.D.). According to an inscription found, this place has been dedicated to the consort of the King. The scale of Shiva Temple No. 2 is very small. If you have seen the Shiva Temple in the square courtyard in the ancient city, then this Shiva Temple. Shiva Temple No 2 is the oldest structure in Polonnaruwa and dates from the brief Chola period when the Indian invaders established the city. Unlike so many buildings in the Ancient Cities, it was built entirely of stone, so the structure today is much as it was when built. Look for the statue of Shiva’s mount, Nandi the bull.
