Introduction
Sri Mayakoothar Temple – Thirukkulandhai, Perunkulam is one of the Nava Tirupathi, nine Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in Tiruchendur-Tirunelveli route, Tamil Nadu, India in the banks of Thamiraparani river. All nine of these temples are classified as “Divya Desams”, the 108 temples of Vishnu revered by the 12 poet saints, or Alwars. The route is from Srivaikundam to Tuticorin or Eral or Authoor buses. There is a special shrine for “Kazhuneer Thuraiyan”(Kazhuneer water used for perumal Abhisheka Thurai Path),at the backside of the temple. There is no direct pooja for this god and whatever rituals done for Perumal is done to this god also after performing it to Perumal which proved to be very very powerful and unique. as the god has no physical form only it has a pair of slippers and a small stick every last Friday of thai(mostly during February first weeks) is special.
Puranic Significance
It is believed that Lord Vishnu came on his Garuda Vaahanam to defeat Asura Asmachaaran. Having defeated the asura, Vishnu is said to have performed his victory dance standing on the asura’s body. The Devas who watched this ‘dancing victory’ of Lord Vishnu wanted him to provide darshan here as ‘Maaya’ ‘Koothan’. According to local history, Kamalavathi, a woman born to Vedasaran, was married to a goddess to perform penance for her. It is also known as the Balika Forest as it is the place where Balika performed penance. Here it is said that a monster called Ashmasaran fought with Bhagavan and Bhagavan fell down and destroyed him by dancing on top of him. According to the prayers of the gods, he received the title of Mayakkuttan. At this point, Garuda has risen to the side with Perumal.
