Introduction

Periyathadagam Anuvavi Subramanya Swami Temple is a Murugan temple located in the village of Periyathadagam in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu. The temple features sanctums for Subramanya Swami, Valli, and Deivanai, as well as additional shrines for Shiva, Anjaneyar (Hanuman), Kannimoola Ganapathi, Navagraha (nine planetary deities), Idumban, and Patha Vinayagar. This temple falls under the jurisdiction of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, classified as a primary temple.

Puranic Significance

When Hanuman was traveling, he became thirsty and prayed to Lord Murugan on this hill. Compassionate towards Hanuman’s plea, Murugan struck the ground with his Vel (spear), causing a stream of water to gush forth from the spot, quenching Hanuman’s thirst. The Valmiki Ramayana attests to the worship of Lord Murugan (Kanda) during the Ramayana period, mentioning twice that the arrows shot by Rama shone like Kanda’s Vel.

The name “Anuvavi” derives from “Hanu,” meaning Hanuman, and “Vavi,” meaning spring or water source. Since a spring emerged for Hanuman, the place was initially called Hanuvavi, which has evolved into Anuvavi. The hill is also known as “Anumakumaran Malai,” acknowledging that Hanuman received blessings from Kumaran (Murugan).

Special Features

The temple is said to be more than 1000 years old. A king of Mysore referred to the spring here as “Kaanachunai” in his inscription. This holy water, which never dries up, quenches the thirst of devotees at all times. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, there is a custom of placing a flower on the deity’s head to seek divine approval before starting a new venture.

Belief

Those seeking the blessing of children worship here for five consecutive Tuesdays. It is believed that bathing before sunrise continuously for several days at this place can cure mental and skin diseases.

Festivals

Kruthika star day is celebrated each month. Special pujas are performed on Thai Poosam day in January-February, car festival on Panguni Uthiram day in March-April and Kavadi Aattam and Annadhanam on Mondays and Fridays are the festivals celebrated in the temple.
