Pernamallur has historical importance as it was a prominent location during the Pallava and early Chola dynasties, specifically in the region of Thondaimandalam. The Chola kings would often rest here while traveling to Pazhaiyarai, making it a central hub for surrounding villages. Historically, the area was primarily governed by the Samburayar kings.

Puranic Significance

• Swayambu Anjaneya: According to legend, a farmer couple, yearning for a child after many years of marriage, discovered a Swayambu (self-manifested) idol of Sri Anjaneya while plowing their fields. When the farmer’s plow got stuck at a specific spot, they unearthed the idol, which the villagers helped them install and worship. The following year, the couple was blessed with a child, and the fame of Sri Anjaneya spread, leading to the establishment of a full-fledged temple.
• War Between Two Kings: The name “Pernamallur” is believed to originate from a historical battle between two kings in this area. The conflict between their armies gave rise to the name, which evolved from “pe-rani-mallur” to “per-na-mallur.”
• Dam Influence: Some believe that the name also relates to a dam constructed across the Panaiyaar River in the region.
