Location:
- Located in Pazhur Village, Trichy District, Tamil Nadu.
- Positioned on the Trichy – Karur Road, after Mutharasanallur.
Alternative Names:
- Known as Navagraha Temple or Navagraha Sthalam in the region due to the powerful Navagraha deities enshrined here.
Presiding Deity:
- Lord Shiva as Vishwanathar.
- Mother Goddess: Visalakshi.
Puranic Significance:
- The temple was built by the Pandian Emperor over 1800 years ago.
- Trichy, known as the capital of the Chola Kingdom, has an intriguing history since the Pandians built this temple in the heart of Chola territory.
- A fish symbol on the temple wall signifies that the temple was built by the Pandian dynasty.
- Despite being a Shiva temple, it was constructed by Sri Vaishnavas, who typically worship Lord Vishnu.
Temple Structure and Features:
- The temple is small with a small Linga as the presiding deity, Vishwanathar.
- The sanctum is east-facing, while the shrine of Vishalakshi is south-facing.
- The temple has additional sub-shrines for Ganesha, Dhakshinamoorthi, Subramanya-Valli-Devasena, and Chandikeswara.
- The temple also houses idols of Surya, Bhairava, and Saneeswarar.
- In 1932 CE, the Navagraha idols were installed under the guidance of Kanchi Maha Swamigal. These idols include their respective consorts, and their vahanas (vehicles) are depicted as relief images below them.
- The twelve Rasis (zodiac signs) are placed below the Navagrahas.
- The unique feature of the Navagraha deities is that they are depicted holding weapons and each has a chakra encrypted in their sculpture.
