Puranic Significance
In the lush greenery of Thondai Nadu, the esteemed temple of Palamkottai Sri Kashi Vishwanathar stands majestically. From the sacred precincts of Kanchipuram, the revered deity is brought in a procession to Thiruvannamalai through a banana grove, where a ceremonial bath is performed. How pleasingly the sandalwood paste adheres to the lingam! Water is required! Along with her sons, she summons Ganapathi and Murugan to accompany her, decreeing their presence!
Ganapathi, looking northwards, proceeded. There, at the foothills of Javvadu Mountain, Munivar Jambhagni performed penance. Impressed, Ganapathi transformed into a crow, striking down his elaborate headdress, and causing the sacred Ganges water to gush forth from it as a purifying river. That became known as Kamandalu River. With this Kamandalu River connecting with Naga River in Sambuvarayanallur, it was named Kamandalu Naga River! Along the banks of Kamandalu Naga River lies Pazhangkaamoor, a town as divine as Varanasi, where Sri Kashi Vishwanathar, along with Mother Sri Visalatchi, presides over a temple.
During the Treta Yuga, Sage Rishyasrunga settled in this region. After performing ablutions in the Kamandalu River and worshiping Sri Kashi Vishwanathar at the northern shore, he regularly visited Kashi. At one time, at the behest of Sage Vasishtha, King Dasharatha came here to seek the blessing of progeny and conducted a miraculous Yagna for that purpose. Additionally, as per the desire of King Dasharatha, accompanied by Sage Rishyasrunga, he installed and performed rituals for Sri Putra Kameshti Easwar.
Even before the time of Rishyasrunga, Sri Kashi Vishwanathar manifested here, emerging from the earth as a great deity from Kamandalu Naga River’s northern bank. Enshrined within a beautiful lingam adorned in the sanctum sanctorum, Sri Kashi Vishwanathar grants divine visions and showers blessings. To the left of the sanctum, Sri Visalatchi Amman, along with her left-hand side, graciously bestows rain of grace.
Belief
Those seeking the blessings of this Ambal will soon receive auspiciousness through a Mangalya ceremony. Those afflicted by Naga dosha will have the Naga Pratishta performed here, thereby mitigating the dosha. Those in need of good employment conduct propitiatory rituals to achieve success. For childless couples, offering honey mixed with milk and yogurt as an abhishekam to Ambal yields positive results.
