Introduction

Panangadi Bhimanathar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Panangadi village, Thirukkuvalai circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. After 18 km from Thiruvarur, you can reach this Panangadi by taking one km on Kachanam Road and turning on the left side road. A small farming village, palm trees line both sides of the curving road. There are houses on both sides of the street, a Shiva temple and a Vaishnava temple here. Shiva has a temple facing east on the bank of the big lake in the northeast side of the town. Here the Presiding deity is called as Bhimanathar and Mother is called as Akilandeswari.

Puranic Significance

The temple is said to be 1000 years old and the Lord is called Bhimanathar because he was worshiped by Bhima, one of the Panchapandas.The Lord is facing east; The Lord is in a strange form with a small lingam in big clothes. Mother Akilandeswari has a sanctum towards the south. At the front is a mandapam with a small ganapati and a small three-cell in front of him.The sanctum sanctorum is built of black stone without any elaborate carvings and the plane is in a beautiful circular shape with Tenmukan on the south side and nothing on the back side. There is an old idol of Vinayagar in this line. Vinayagar Murugan MahaLakshmi has its own temples. In the north-east there is Navagraga mandapam. Nandi sits in a small hall in front of the Lord and behind it there is an altar on a platform with beautiful carvings.
