Introduction
Palayanur Agatheeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Palayanur village, Nagai circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. Palayanur is a small village, here the Presiding deity is called as Agatheeswarar and Mother is called as Anandavalli.
Puranic Significance
This Shiva temple is situated in a plain on the bank of a large lake in the middle of the town. Agathiyamamuni consecrated and worshiped the special Lord in this east facing temple.
The temple is lit by a prakaram along the large enclosure wall. The Lord shines with an east facing hall and a Nandi Mandapam in front of it. Ambigai is facing south with her womb facing south. Dakshanamurthy is in the south of Karurai Kottam. To the west of the Prakaram there is a long hall and there is a temple where Lord Karpagavinayayakar is placed, and Nagar.
Next, there is a stone mandapam in which Vishwanatha Ambikai visalatshi, Lingamurthy and Niliyamman are presented. To the next is Muruga sanctum. In the north there is a sanctum sanctorum and a well. Adjacent to the sanctum sanctorum is the Durga shrine. In a long hall in the north-east, Nagar bhairava is presented. The Temple is believed to be 1300 years old. This temple is a temporary control by the government.
