Introduction
Omkareshwar is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Mandhata, nearby Khandwa city in Khandwa district of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. This temple is more than 1500 Years old shiva temple. According to the belief here, it is said that this temple is older than the Mahabharata period. Due to its old age, it has become dilapidated condition. The temple is facing towards the east side. The temple consists of sanctum and Mukha Mandapa. A Broken Nandi can be found in front of Mukha Mandapa facing towards the sanctum. The sanctum enshrines the Presiding deity is called as Omkareshwar, in the form of small lingam. It is about 16 km from Barwaha in Madhya Pradesh. Omkareshwar is formed by the sacred river Narmada. This is one of the most sacred rivers in India and is now home to one of the world’s biggest dam projects. The temple is situated on Mandhata or Shivpuri island on the banks of Narmada and river Kaveri (a tributary of Narmada).
