This temple is situated on the Thiruvarur-Nagapattinam road, 9 km east of Thiruvarur, on the left side of the road. In this place, the Nagas worshiped the Lord and benefited. Here the Presiding deity is called as Lord Naganathan Swamy and Mother is called as Soundaranayaki. Vasishta, Vishwamitra and Narada have been worshiped in this temple. There is a shrine of Ashtabhu Jadurga in this temple. Although it is said that Garuda and the snake are enmity, this temple is the proud one where both of them worshiped the Lord in the same place and received the miracle of curse.
Puranic Significance
The temple is said to be more than 1500 years old. Karkotaka, one of the Ashtanagas, thought of what to do to escape from Garuda, and came to Vennaravan to count the Lord, and the Lord gave him a sign and said, ‘You will not be harmed by anyone’. Lord Shiva bowed down to it and prayed to the devotees worshiping at this temple to remove the evils of the snake, and said ‘So is it’. Accordingly, the Lord blesses those who come here by removing the sarpa dosha. Because of the worship of the snake, Lord Shiva was named Naganathan. There is a big east facing temple tower. Looking towards the east, Lord Naganath, who removes all evils, appears as a beautiful lingam.
Beliefs
The people of this region believe that Sri Jaya Durga, who appears with eight arms, will be worshiped on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with clothes and lemon garlands, to remove the evils of marriage.
Special Features
