Introduction

Nareshwar group of temple is located in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh, but which lie close to and are easily accessible from Gwalior. Nareshwar is the closest site to Gwalior, just 20km distant from the city center, and is accessible via a dirt track to the left of the Gwalior-Bhind road before Malanpur. These group of Shiva temples Built in around 8th century AD, this cluster of temples, a gem of a location. It is just a 4-5 km from the airport, near the Mawai Dam, hidden in a ridge in the rocky hills. It seems to be a cousin of temple cluster, Bateshwar, with very similar style, patronage and size.

Puranic Significance

This is a cluster of temples dating to the 8th-9th century AD which were built by the Pratihara dynasty who were at the peak of their glory between the 7th to the 11th centuries. This group of temples were excavated by Archaeological Survey of India and process is still continued. There are around 21 temples still standing on three sides of the mountain. Nareshwar Temples are of Nagara styles and were built under the reign of Gurjara-Pratihara Dynasty. On the mountain there is a rare tank with stairs is surrounded by temples. The tank has been made by cutting out the rocks of the mountain. There are statues of different deities like Shiva and Hanuman.
