Introduction
Location: 8 km from Ramanathaswamy Temple, Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu.Presiding Deity: Nambu Nayagiamman (also known as Nambu Nayagi Amman).Historical Significance:
- The temple is believed to date back to the 14th century.
- Two sages, Dakshina Duruvan and Pachima Duruvan, performed penance here and were blessed by Mother Parvadhavardhini.
- King Sulodharan, during the Sinhalese rule, built the temple after being cured by the goddess.
Legends & Beliefs:
- The goddess is said to cure diseases and bless devotees seeking children or marital harmony.
- A saying, “Nambunayakiyai Vananginal Vambillai,” highlights the goddess’s grace and protection.
- Devotees often fast on Tuesdays and Fridays to seek blessings for children and marriage.
Medicinal Springs:
- The temple is surrounded by holy springs, known as Sarvaroga Nivarana Theerthams, believed to cure all diseases.
Special Features:
- Located in a serene area with beach sand dunes and a large banyan tree.
- Famous for its large bells at the entrance and a unique open shrine for Lord Rama.
- The original temple was in Dhanushkodi, which was submerged in the 1964 storm; the idol was moved to the current location.
Festivals:
- Navarathri (Purattasi – September-October) is the main festival, where the deity is adorned as Nava Shakti on the 9th day.
- Other special prayers and offerings are made throughout the year, especially for healing and blessings.
