Introduction

Nagapattinam Amrithakadeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva Located in the Nagapattinam circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. This temple is the westernmost temple among the twelve temples of Dunagai, which is built behind the Malai Iswaran temple, next to the temple of Nilayatashi Amman temple. Here the Primary deity is called as Lord Amritakadeswarar and Mother is called as Brahmananda Sundari.

Puranic Significance

Devas and Asuras crossed the ocean of milk and carried away the nectar that appeared in it, while the Asuras did not like it. On the way, they set up a Theertham in Naga to perform Shiva Puja. When the water came back, Amrita Kalasam had turned into a linga form and became a tumor. It is said that Lord Amritakadeswara appeared and blessed him.

To the west of the temple is a three-tiered Rajagopuram. It has a beautiful sculpture of gods and demons biting the sea of milk. The Vishu mandapam was built by Thiru Anandarangampillai, who served as an interpreter during the French Empire. A symbol of this is the image of his male counterpart on a pillar.

The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old. The sanctum arthamandapam is called Mugamandapam. There are two black stone pillars at the sanctum sanctorum gate. The sanctum sanctorum is made of stone and the upper flight is made of brick. The divisions include Durgai, Lingotpawar and Tenmugan. The Tenmugan shrine is a beautiful black stone mandapam. In the south-west there are seven Nagas on the door of the shrine of Sundaravi Nayak. An ancient Sunday is kept near Durga. The theertha of this temple is near the south mukhamandapam. The pond is drying up. Sthalam theertham is the specialty of this temple.
