Puranic Significance
- Legend: A woman chopping grass hit a stone from which blood oozed. She cried out “Sureya” to her son, leading to the place being named Sureya, which evolved into Surya.
- Temple Construction: Built in the 13th century CE with patronage from the Banga chieftains.
- Architecture: Traditional coastal style with a tiled sloping roof.
- Entrance: Small arch with stucco images of Lord Shiva, Parvati, Nandi, and Lion.
- Dwaja Sthamba: A tall flagpole facing the sanctum.
- Sanctum: Enshrines Surya Sadashiva in the form of a Shiva Linga.
- Kalyani: A stepped well outside the temple, 55 feet deep.
- Naga Devata Shrine: Located in a forested area.
- Shiva Lingas: Rocks resembling Shiva Lingas found in a deep pit beyond the shrine.
Beliefs and Traditions

- Timing: Devotees visit the temple, preferably on Mondays, with clay offerings, a coconut, and 1 kg of rice.
- Harake Bana (Wish Forest): Offers a place to place the clay models, symbolizing the devotees’ wishes.
