Introduction
- Location: The temple is situated in Muthuvenpatti, on the western bank of the Mullai River.
- Deity: The temple is dedicated to Nagakaliamman, with Mother Ambica depicted holding a trident, snake, Udukkai, and kumkum.
- Age: The temple is approximately 800 years old.
- Special Shrine: Sri Kamakshi Amman has a separate shrine with a palm roof.
Puranic Significance:
- The temple was originally an ant-hill surrounded by Sangu flower plants.
- Goddess Nagakaliamman appeared in the dream of a Shiva devotee and revealed her presence in the ant-hill. When the ant-hill was dug, her Swayambu idol (self-manifested) was found.
- The idol was installed on the ant-hill and named Swayambu Nagakaliamman.
- A Pathala Vaideeswarar Lingam is present in a pit made of herbals, believed to heal those suffering from prolonged illness.
- Shrines: There are additional shrines for Vinayaka, Gowmari, and Bhagavati Amman.
Prayer for Marriage:
- Lord Shiva is also worshiped as Ashtothara Linga, with 108 small lingas carved into a large linga.
- Marriage prayers: Those facing marriage obstacles offer turmeric garlands to Lord Shiva and Ambika.
- Horoscope rituals: Men circle a tree seven times clockwise, and women eight times, according to their horoscopes, to improve marital prospects.
Sugarcane Juice Pongal:
- Shivarathri: On Shivarathri day, Pongal (a sweet rice pudding) made from bamboo rice and sugarcane juice is offered to the goddess.
- Festivals: A three-day festival during Navaratri begins on Tuesday, with devotees carrying fire pots and milk pots as vows to the Goddess. Sweet porridge is offered as Nivedhana on Tuesdays, Fridays, and New Moon and Full Moon days.
