Introduction
Muthurajapuram Adavallabhanath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Muthurajapuram village, Thirukkuvalai circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. This Shiva temple is built during the Mutharaiyaya period (600 CE- 850CE) has seen many changes and today it is a small temple towards the east and there is a big temple nearby.
There is a big lake in the middle of the town and these two temples are on its banks. Here the Lord is called as Adavallabanathar and Mother is called as Vandadiambikai. Among the Vandadi Ambikai Siddhas, there is a lineage called Vandasiddhis. There is a legend that because the Lord gave a performance to meet their request, they got the name Aadavallabanathar, and because they enjoyed worshiping Ambikai, Ambikai came here and got the name.
The Lord is facing east and is a huge lingamurthy. Valampurivinayaka and Balamurugan are at the sanctum sanctorum gate. There is a front hall which has a large Nandi towards the Lord, a large Subramanya towards the south, Dakshnamurthy nearby, Sandesar an ancient bas-relief and Bhairava towards the west. Here the Lord is giving blessings only to the local people in the one-time puja.
